The current situation
For over half a century, road drainage has relied on kerb gutters with integrated road gullies, typically constructed with drain bodies according to DIN 4052. These systems, often built with paved curb gutters, require significant time and financial investment.
The upper extension of the drain forms the visible end, but in conventional designs, traffic loads are transferred directly to the drain body. When driven over, this leads to overloading of mortar joints and drain bases. The concrete components—still manufactured with an unreinforced wall thickness of just 50 mm - are particularly vulnerable. The result:
- Cracked drain bodies
- Damaged mortar joints
- Leaking drainage systems
Unlike sewer systems, road drains are rarely inspected regularly. Damage is often only detected when it becomes visually apparent - such as subsidence around the drain or broken frames. In response to increasing traffic loads, some installations use Class D 400 extensions instead of Class C 250, but this only addresses part of the problem.
Reinforcing the extension alone is insufficient if the substructure remains unreinforced. A holistic approach is needed - one that considers the entire system, from the surface to the base.
The solution - ACO Multitop System Bituplan roll-in attachments
The ACO Multitop System with Bituplan covers leverages the proven technology of Bituplan manhole covers. These covers are directly rolled into the asphalt, ensuring a flush, seamless integration with the road surface. This allows for efficient and cost-effective blacktop installation right up to the kerb, eliminating the need for labor-intensive and expensive paved kerb channels.
Unlike traditional systems, ACO Bituplan covers do not come into direct contact with the drain body. The vulnerable mortar joint beneath the extension is no longer required. Instead, the covers are suspended within the asphalt, effectively transferring traffic loads to the surrounding area. This design significantly reduces stress on the drain body, which now functions primarily as a formwork shell.
Advantages:
- Can be rolled in flush with the surface and damping PEWEPREN inserts, therefore low-emission
- Lightweight, hydraulically optimized grates
- Grille can be opened by approx. 110° and removed thanks to multifunctional double hinge
- Safe and easy to operate thanks to maintenance-free screwless locking mechanism
- Relief of the drain body due to decoupling of top and drain
- Adapter frame and L-shaped frame geometry for reliable installation
- Shorter construction times
