Redesign of Weißenburger Straße, Röttenbach

Röttenbach’s vision for the future: A greener, safer, and more attractive town center

The residents of Röttenbach, a municipality in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, have launched an ambitious urban development project aimed at transforming their town by the year 2030. The goal: to make the central area more appealing, pedestrian-friendly, and future-ready.

Revitalizing the Heart of Röttenbach

With more green spaces and a thoughtfully designed town square, Röttenbach aims to restore charm to its center—compensating for the loss of historical character caused by bombings during World War II.

Improving Quality of Life and Traffic Safety

A key measure is the major redesign of Weißenburger Straße, a previously unattractive part of the town. This area is being gradually converted into a green, traffic-calmed zone, enhancing both livability and safety.

To support this transformation, the wastewater sewer system was relocated, and a new stormwater drainage system was constructed to manage surface water effectively.

Efficient stormwater management in Röttenbach: 48 ACO Combipoint PE Road drainage systems installed

As part of the urban redesign of Weißenburger Straße in Röttenbach, 48 ACO Combipoint PE Separation Road Gullies (SSA) were installed. These advanced drainage systems are engineered to retain settleable solids and harmful substances directly at the point of collection—preventing pollutants from entering the sewer system or surface waters.

Why advanced road drainage matters

With the expansion of sealed surfaces and road networks, the volume of stormwater runoff—and the pollutants it carries—has significantly increased. Unlike conventional gullies with sediment traps, the SSA system effectively retains floating debris, settleable solids, and particle-bound pollutants, even during heavy rainfall events. This prevents the re-mobilization of previously settled materials.

Lightweight, durable, and easy to install

Weighing only around 25 kg, the SSA is easy to handle on-site and requires no additional machinery for installation. Its monolithic polyethylene (PE) construction eliminates the need for mortar joints, offering a long-lasting and low-maintenance solution compared to traditional concrete components.

Application and operation

The SSA is ideal for decentralized stormwater treatment in areas where pollution is primarily caused by settleable particulate matter. It is especially suitable when the polluted surface area is small relative to the total connected drainage area, in line with regulatory separation guidelines.

Unlike many comparable systems, the SSA requires no filter replacements or complex cleaning procedures. Routine maintenance is simple and cost-effective, using standard flushing and suction vehicles—just like conventional gullies.

Three-stage separation system for maximum efficiency

The SSA combines the functionality of a traditional gully with a bottom outlet and sediment trap, enabling three levels of solid separation:

  1. Surface retention
The gully top acts as a grate, capturing coarse debris such as leaves and branches.
  2. Intermediate filtration
A suspended bucket (Form A 4 according to DIN 4052-4) filters particles larger than 8 mm through predefined slot openings.
  3. Sediment trap
Remaining settleable solids are captured in the sediment chamber—even during intense rainfall. A turbulence-reducing insert ensures controlled energy dissipation, preventing disturbance of settled materials.

Together, these three stages deliver at least 32% better solid retention compared to conventional gullies with sediment traps—and 71% better performance than systems with only bottom outlets.

ACO Combipoint Road Gullies – Compatible Cast Iron Covers for Reliable Performance

To complement the various versions of ACO Combipoint road gullies, ACO offers high-quality cast iron covers made from EN-GJS / EN-GJL, as well as options with BEGU frames and cast grates. ACO prioritizes durability and safety—our grates meet the strict GET quality and testing standards for channel castings (RAL-GZ 692).

Designed for Operational Efficiency

These covers are built to deliver long-term functionality, low maintenance, and maximum traffic safety. Their user-friendly design ensures easy handling and minimal upkeep, making them a cost-effective solution for urban drainage systems.

Versatile Compatibility

ACO covers are compatible with standard concrete gully components according to DIN 4052. They also meet the requirements of DIN EN 124-2, making them suitable for use with sludge buckets as specified in DIN 4052-4. Thanks to the PEWEPREN insert in the frame, the covers are rattle-free, ensuring quiet and secure operation even under heavy traffic loads.
